A glimpse, in words and pictures, of the places where Georges and his team shot the different episodes in the INSECTIA series and of some of the incidents that occurred. A chance to meet the people they met and to catch Georges live, in all his glory.

Kilometro 88: a bird's-eye view of the rainforest |
|
In 1973, a major event occurred in La Gran Savana, Venezuela's great savannah, of Venezuela. El Dorado, centre of Venezuela's richest gold deposits, and the city of Santa Elena, 360 kilometres to the south, were finally linked by a dirt road. Paved in 1990, this road runs along the border between Venezuela and Guyana and cuts right across the Gran Sabana.
Before the great savannah lies a vast and dense rainforest. Two small mining villages, just a few kilometres apart, are at the heart of this forest: Las Claritas and San Isidro, often called Kilometro 88 because that's how many kilometres it is from El Dorado (kilometre 1). |

Around these two agglomerations, the forest is blanketed with miles of mining trails. For a film crew, it's movie heaven: accessible and easy to get around.
The heat here is oppressive. We were in the lowlands, just before the plateau of the great savannah, which is more temperate because windswept. We counted our blessings, though, because hot and humid meant lots of insects, and that's what we were there for. |

Downtown Las Claritas |

Las Claritas and San Isidro grew up as a result of the gold rush in the region about a century ago. Dirty and ugly, they're every bit as unattractive as their Wild West counterparts in the U.S. |

| We booked the crew into the most fashionable hotel in town -- the Campamento Turistico Anaconda, which had the dubious advantage of being right on the highway, where the action is ... but where the music never stops! Fine for tourists who come to have a rollicking good time, but not ideal for a film crew that has to get up at 5 a.m. in the morning. We'd have preferred siesta to fiesta! |
