A glimpse, in words and pictures, of the places where Georges and his team shot the different episodes in the INSECTIA series and of some of the incidents that occurred. A chance to meet the people they met and to catch Georges live, in all his glory.

Venezuela - Yutaje

The waterfall cascading down the Yutaje table mountain
Amazonas state is situated at the southern tip of Venezuela. For the INSECTIA crew, it was dreamlike: 175,000 square kilometres of rainforests punctuated with rivers and the spectacular mountains that characterize Venezuela's Gran Sabana plains, called tepuis, or table mountains. It presents all the biodiversity of the Amazon as well as a great array of landscapes.

Our destination was a Campamento near the Yutaje mountain table, renowned for the beautiful double waterfall that cascades down one of its slopes. According to legend, this double waterfall appeared after a young warrior and his beloved leapt to their deaths from the top of the bluff.

The Campamento Yutaje is only accessible by small plane. It is a one-hour flight east of Puerto Ayacucho. For the entire flight, all you see -- and stretching as far as the eye can see -- are the jungle and the mountains -- a truly awesome sight.

The single engine planes landed on the Campamento's private dirt runway. This marked the beginning of our adventure at Yutaje.

Campamento Yutaje welcomes researchers as well as ecotourists. It is managed by the Terramare Foundation, which has facilities on the site and its headquarters in Caracas, the capital.

Venezuela - Puerto Nuevo

Campamento Yutaje offers visitors access to some one hundred kilometres of well laid out jungle trails.

The area's greatest attraction is unquestionably the Manapiare River. Myriad birds live along its shores: kingfishers, eagles and even a few storks. Every once in a while, we'd spot a river dolphin surfacing for air.

In a dugout canoe, you can easily get to the base of the Manapiare waterfall. The river flow is quite unpredictable. Sometimes, the waterfall will decrease to a series of small cascades, only to swell to a raging wall of water a few days later.

Only 40,000 people inhabit the immense Amazonas territory. For the most part, they are indigenous Yanomami, Guajibo and Piaroa Indians.

Thirty minutes by canoe from Campamento Yutaje is a small Piaroa community. The tiny village is called Puerto Nuevo and this is where the Child's Play episode of INSECTIA was shot.

Needless to say, visitors are rare in Puerto Nuevo. Just the same, or perhaps because of it, the Piaroa Indians welcomed the INSECTIA crew with open arms.

It took a little while but we slowly fit in to the life of the village, keeping our distance when that seemed to be what some preferred and eagerly forging ties with those who spontaneously stepped forward to help us.

The kindness of the people of the rainforest will never cease to amaze us.
