A glimpse, in words and pictures, of the places where Georges and his team shot the different episodes in the INSECTIA series and of some of the incidents that occurred. A chance to meet the people they met and to catch Georges live, in all his glory.

Mexico - Mexico City

The cathedral in mexico City
At the turn of the 21st century, Mexico City, with its 20 million inhabitants, will be one of the largest cities in the world. Even before landing, the visitor is sure of it. Seen from the air, Mexico City stretches, in all directions, as far as the eye can see. Some arteries are over 20 kilometres long!

Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital that dominated Ancient Mexico, has given way to a megapolis that continues to dominate the country. The pre-Colombian heritage is still very much alive in Mexico, which boasts magnificent Aztec ruins and an incomparable museum of anthropology.

Mexico City also has numerous restaurants that serve Ç pre-Colombian È dishes. Many of the traditional dishes served in these restaurants are made with insects as their main ingredients. In Mexico, entomophagy has always been on the menu. You can buy insects at the market or eat them at your corner restaurant, such as the El Aguilita.

Insects are also eaten in more high-class restaurants, such as the Don Chon, which now enjoys an international reputation. This restaurant is not just a tourist attraction, many of its patrons are Mexicans who go there regularly to eat insect dishes.

Mexico - Hidalgo

The state of Hidalgo is situated in northern Mexico. In this arid rural area, the peasants have to be very resourceful to make their lives a little easier.

In the small Hidalgo town of Tulancalco, we were what seemed light-years away from the dangers of the capital. We were welcomed with open arms by Don Juan Sanchez and his family.

Don Sanchez insists that his visitors taste his pulche, a homemade brew made with agave leaves.

Afterwards, if your head isn't spinning too much, Don Juan will take you on a tour of the district on horseback to show you where to find edible insects.

When in Hidalgo, do as the people of Hidalgo!

Mexico - Oaxaca

Georges finally finds the edible chapulli grasshoppers he was looking for
Oaxaca state is located in southern Mexico, in a fertile valley. In the city of the same name is a famous marketplace where farmers and artisans of all kinds sell their products.

What Georges is looking for isn't Oaxaca's famous pottery ... unless of course it is decorated with insect patterns!

The state of Oaxaca is also famous for its particular version of tequila, mescal. The distillery where we filmed is called Destiladora de Mezcal Espina Dorada.

Georges Brossard was finally able to realize an old dream of his -- put a maguey worm inside a bottle of mescal. This worm is what gives Hildalgo mescal its distinctive flavour.

Quiet! Action! Grinding agave leaves.

Canada - MontrŽal

The MontrŽal Insectarium, founded in 1991 by Georges Brossard
Each year, the MontrŽal Insectarium holds an insect-tasting event, Croque-insectes, which is becoming increasingly popular.

Beyond its Ç taste sensation È or Ç novelty È aspect, the event's growing popularity may mean attitudes are beginning to change about the merits of entomophagy. Even so, we don't think camembert, maple syrup or hamburgers are about to become history anytime soon!
